Source: Wikipedia, Pinterest Have you ever considered getting a dog and adopting it into your family? There are lots of dog breeds in this world and you begin to wonder which one to purchase. Unlike us who can do everything on our own, dogs are a lot of work. They require extra care and exercise to maintain their healthy physical and psychological state. However, if you are up to challenges and willing to devote most of your time to them, there are some high-maintenance dog breeds that you can consider getting.  1. Shiba Inu The  Shiba Inu is one of the most popular dog breeds that originated in Japan. It has a fox-like appearance and a gorgeous, thick coat.  Though they appear to be very calm dogs, you have to keep an eye on them as they naturally inherited the trait of their wolf ancestry. They are incredibly difficult to raise and train, especially with their quick reflexes which make them need to be kept on a leash most of the time.  Not to mention, a Shiba Inu owner should take t

Why Mandarin is Important and Tips to Start Learning Mandarin | Beginner to Intermediate Level Friendly Guide

In Frame: Boya Chinese Textbook and 'Put Your Head on My Shoulder' novel

Mandarin has evolved into a global second language that is now widely used throughout the world, mostly in the business and academic sectors. Ever since I was in elementary school, my mom has encouraged me to learn Mandarin despite the fact that it was not widely spoken at that time.

As a kid, I didn't really like the language because it was too difficult compared to English, but I always did well when it comes to the Mandarin examination and HSK.

However, I still didn't take Mandarin too seriously, until recently I realized the language is as important as English. Especially when I found out many Chinese businesses are developing in Indonesia.

So here I am, beginning my journey to restart my Mandarin knowledge as I have forgotten far too many words. These are also tips for those who wish to start learning Mandarin.

1. The alphabet and tones

If you are a complete beginner, it's best to start with the alphabet and learn how to pronounce consonants and vowels. The pronunciation may appear to be the same, but it is not, and if you speak it incorrectly, it may have a different meaning.

The next step is to learn the tones. Mandarin languages have four tones. These tones are just as crucial as how the letter is spoken. Each tone has a different connotation if pronounced wrongly, which can lead to confusion.

2. Learn the vocabulary

You can learn the vocabulary and learn how to write the Hanzi  – Mandarin characters – at the same time. If you are unsure how to write the characters, you can use Pleco which will walk you through the process.

Trying to scribble the characters while trying to remember the meaning will definitely help you remember what you have learned.

3. Learn from a textbook

Learning from a textbook can help you succeed in your language learning journey because it will present you with a lot of exercises and short stories. Boya Chinese is one of the Mandarin textbooks that I recommend.

It includes a range of levels from beginner to advanced, and the vocabulary is exactly what we need in everyday life. Furthermore, the instruction is given in English, with grammar lessons and exercises included.

4. Watch movies in Mandarin

I personally think that watching movies in Mandarin or Chinese drama is the most effective way to learn and absorb the language. Not only is the learning process enjoyable, but we also gain a lot of useful everyday terminology.

The dynasty period is presented in a large number of Chinese dramas. If you're a beginner or intermediate viewer, though, I recommend starting with a light genre like a slice of life or romance.

5. Talk to the natives

To really acquire a language, you need to immerse yourself in the society of your target language. But what if your surroundings cannot provide it?

Well, the answer is to make use of the internet. You can easily find so many native Chinese speakers to help you in improving your Mandarin proficiency.

One of the best mobile apps that I recommend is WeChat. Most WeChat users are from mainland China and you can try to befriend them and communicate by using Mandarin.

Though Mandarin is a challenging language to learn, it's not impossible to master it with hard work and consistency in learning.
